Reasons why your should use a vector program to design a logo.

Need a logo for your business?

Why you shouldn't use photoshop!

Thursday, August 11, 2022

If you're starting a new business, one of the first things you'll need is a logo.

Your logo is your company's identity and should represent your products or services in the best way possible. While programs like Photoshop are readily available, that is NOT what you should be using to design your branding. Photos (raster images) are made up of 'pixels' and they do not scale well.

The best choice for a logo is a 'vector' program. They can be scaled to ANY size because they are high resolution and it won't change when you adjust the size.

For your logo to be a professional representation of your business, you need to consider:

  1. Scalability: whether it's a large scale billboard or on a business card, an effective logo needs to appear clear and sharp. Raster images are limited to whatever resolution they were created, while a vector image can be scaled up without changing the integrity of the logo.
  2. Versatility: if your logo is to be effective, it will have to be seen at it's best in a wide range of places. It will be the first impression of your business and used everywhere! Whatever is created needs to accommodate all the different sizes and applications needed. Will your logo be able to fit the bill?
  3. Professional: your logo represents your company's identity and need to earn the trust of your potential customers. If your logo is designed in a raster format and is enlarged improperly, it may appear pixelated and unprofessional. An experienced designer will know this and develop it as a vector image so this will not happen.
  4. Simplicity: a logo designed in a photo editing application may have many layers to their existence. Even when 'flattened', this can make a complex logo and may not display well in all formats or sizes. Keeping a logo simplified can help
  5. Text size: your logo will be used in many different ways, therefor text size should be considered. Do not include small text for Ltd., or Inc. They may be lost if used in smaller applications or vinyl lettering, for instance. Your branding does not require that designation to be on everything.
  6. Slogans: similar to the designations above, your slogan should only be used on your marketing materials. It does not need to be part of your logo.

Remember, this is your identity (or brand) and you want the first impression to be GREAT! Don't let the quality suffer by having it designed with a program that wasn't intended for logo designs. You can achieve awesome effects with a vector program and not worry about what it will look like when used differently.

The two examples below shows how bad the 'raster' image looks compared to the 'vector' version, when enlarged. Don't run into this problem and have your company's reputation suffer.

We always use Adobe Illustrator (THE vector program) to professionally design all of our logos! Show your business in it's best light... everywhere!
